Don’t you just hate it when you’re in the kitchen, ready to make a meal that you’ve been craving until you realise you lack the ingredients? Your pantry is nearly empty; or, it could be full of stuff that you don’t really need!

We all have been in this situation, and it’s annoying. Prevent the unplanned grocery trips; here is a list of ingredients you should have in your pantry:

Favourite Spices

We all have our preferences when it comes to spices. These are the ones we often used in our dishes, so it only makes sense to have them in stock in our pantry all the time. The must-have spices are:

  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Oregano
  • Basil
  • Bay leaves
  • Thyme
  • Nutmeg
  • Garlic powder
  • Onion powder
  • Cayenne pepper
  • Paprika
  • Chilli powder
  • Cumin
  • Cinnamon

Necessary Oils

Many recipes require different oils; you need to have the important oils in your pantry like olive oil, coconut oil, vegetable oil and canola oil.

Baking Staples

Even though you’re not a baker, you need a few baking staples for cooking. This includes flour, brown sugar, powdered sugar, honey, baking powder, baking soda, active yeast, cocoa powder and pure vanilla extract.

Canned Goods

You know those nights when you just can’t bring yourself to cook dinner? Thankfully, there is such a thing as canned goods, and they will suffice on nights (or days) like that. Have some canned goods that you like to stock up in your pantry. They will be pretty handy as well during a storm or those times when you can’t go out due to bad weather and other reasons.

Aside from canned goods, you should also have canned stock and broths, which are perfect to use for soups, casseroles, etc.

Grains, Pasta and Legumes

The quickest and easiest main dish ingredients are grains and pasta. Therefore, they should always be available in your pantry. You can also combine them together plus legumes and poof, you get yourself a hearty dish.

Healthy Snacks

There’s nothing wrong with having some “unhealthy” snacks in your pantry, but it’s best to have healthier alternatives there. With that, you will be more encouraged to eat healthily. Fill your pantry with snacks like dried fruits, nuts, popcorn, granola bars and pretzels.

Wine

Wine isn’t only great for drinking, but you can use them for cooking as well. Therefore, you should have at least a couple of red and white wines in your pantry to add more flavour and spice to your dish or for that much-needed nightcap.

Your pantry is there for a reason—to serve as storage for necessary foods items that you will need. Make sure you’re making the most out of it!

Having a Stocked Pantry Is the Way to Go

These food items are what your pantry MUST always have. When your pantry is stocked with these, it’s unlikely for you to go to the grocery store in the middle of the night just to get pepper or salt. Make sure you keep in mind all of these things and replenish them every time you go to the grocery store.
